Seen: Emotional Detection

A live camera reads faces and expression, and an emotion vocabulary radiates outward from each person on thin white rules.

Seen: Emotional Detection, image 1

A live camera feed detects faces and facial landmarks. For each person, words for what the system believes it is reading, joy, grateful, satisfied, sorrow, heartbreak, despondent, extend outward on fine white lines set in an italic serif.

The background falls away and the words connect to the faces that produced them, which makes the reading visible and, deliberately, arguable. The piece is as much about the confidence of the machine as about the feeling.

The first of the three live systems, and the origin of the method the other two extend.
